Everyones different I commute 12 miles in the morning I like to do this on an empty stomach I then look forward to toast and cereal at work with strong coffee - IMO It will all depend on your level and at what intensity your ride is for example mine is 80 - 85% max heart rate from start to finish there is not enough time for the food to digest before I leave the house therefore I would get an upset stomach
Quite the opposite here. I work nights so get out of bed just in time to collect the kids from school then prepare a full family evening meal which is eaten in a hurry when my wife gets home from work. Straight after eating to the point where I nearly always wish I hadn't eaten so much I jump on my bike and 'sprint' for 10 miles to work (10 miles in around 35 minutes plus or minus 2 minutes). I have never really felt ill for doing this but I also don't think setting off without anything to eat would be a problem? I just do it this way because that is what family life dictates.
My advice to the OP would be have a normal breakfast before you go then you shouldn't really need to eat when you get to work until lunchtime. Obviously everyone is different and you will soon work out what works best for you.
