I like my 2018 B17, but my most comfortable saddle is a Spa Nidd, which is even heavier than the Brooks. It only became comfortable after a thorough soaking followed by a 5 mile ride. Previously I had tried tenderising it with a rubber mallet , but that didn't work.

I’m a big Brooks B17 fan. I have one on all three bikes, the oldest is ca 2004 and cost £25. The main downside is they are 200g more than others and the saddle rails are short. The upside is I find them so comfortable I gave up padded shorts many years ago.

I think that's the key: either you have a Brooks shaped backside when you get it, or, you put up with it for 2000km, and if you're lucky, then you'll have a Brooks shaped backside.

Yes, that’s correct. The first one probably took more than 500 miles but after that each new one has been comfy from the start. Probably because I’m used to them and that they are thinner than they used to be.

That's true for me, too.I don't wear padded shorts either anymore, and I don't end up with soreness even after 40-50 miles.

I have B17s on my everyday and tourer bikes, and a Swallow on my fast bike. All 3 are really comfortable, so I guess I have the right shape in the Marble Arch area.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned the appeal of once-in-a-lifetime purchases that improve with age and gain character. Given that I find them comfortable anyway, this is the main reason I like them.

Unlike so many bicycles today, you pay a Brooks premium because they can last for decades.

Brooks Flyer for me - with the state of the roads it provides a very comfortable ride - can't say I really notice the weight as the comfort advantage out-weighs it by a huge margin!!

I swapped in the Flyer without changing the seat post. I can’t get the blighter level.

Am I missing something or do I need a new seatpost and if so, which?
