my brother has just took up cycling and he told me about an incident that happened about 5 weeks ago.

happily peddling along, bus overtakes him and immediately pulls into a bus stop causing him to brake and swerve.

obviously, a bit p'd off, he goes to speak to the driver and the driver sticks his fingers up at him and drives off

i asked him if he reported it and he said no and then told me this little gem...

he had his 2 year old son on the back of the bike!!!!:ohmy::ohmy:

i've told him to work it out when and where it was and report it anyway, even if he's not sure about the exact time and location....

... and next time use the emergency cut out button at the back of the bus.

Sometimes a bus pulling in like that is normal. Not saying it's right.I find Waterloo Bridge has poor bus behaviour.I had one flashing me the other week as I was cycling past a bus stop,so I caught him up at the North End of the bridge and asked him what the problem was.

Ah Ah - that can take them ages and sometimes a mechanic to get it started again. At the end of a route where I used to live, the drivers left the engines running while they took their break. This was 30ft from peoples front window. Well one resident used to sneak out round the back of the bus and turn them off. The local RA news letter had a request for the person responsible to stop as it disrupted the whole route.

Was it too much effort to request the drivers to turn the engines off themselves?

They did that many times, but new driver who can't be bothered or doesn't want to sit in a cold bus in the winter and you had to start again.

Im amazed on the number of suggestions to use the emergency only cut off engine button, you do realise the bus will stop where it is dont you? How dangerous could that get?

This is just as bad, knowing peoples lack of patience, how many drivers do you see trying to get passed a stationary bus at lights, and the possible dangers this could cause?
If you must retaliate to a bad driver, do it in ways which dont endanger everyone else, or wouldnt it be your fault if an accident happened because you immobilised a large vehicle at the lights?

it can also cause passengers hips to dislocate if the bus is moving at the time since the whole transmission gets locked by the engine stopping causing an emergency stop.

or better still, check behind when approaching bus stops, if there's a bus close behind move out into primary. They generally get the hint.

Doesn't it just stop the engine? Seems a bit stupid if it locks the bus up IMO.

get in your car, drive along at 20 mph and turn the engine off without putting your foot on the clutch

the fact that you've stopped the engine without warning means that the driver (unlikely since most buses have an automatic gear box) or the bus itself hasn't had chance to disengage the clutch. this often does a better job of stopping the vehicle than pulling the hand brake on.
