Budget 700/23 tyres and tubes

Hi, am after a little advice. I've been given a peugeot optimum 531 which needs tyres and tubes after sitting in a garage for 5 years.

Being up north, I need a defend all rounder tyre but don't want to pay the earth. On a popular auction site I can pay £25 for tyres and tubes, either Michelin dynamic sports or Schwalbe Lugano. There re probably other on there but these 2 come up straight away.

I was going to say exactly the same thing! Rubinos. I have even found the Zaffiros to be good at two and a half quid less.

Rubino, or Bontrager Hard Case. Or Michelin Lithion2 if you look round.

I run the aforementioned Mitch Lithions on my commuter, they do the job for me. Before that I got Bontrager Race lites for the same price (normally twice the price) in a bike shop on line sale.

Bontrager Racelite Hard Cases I'd go for in an instant, best commuting tyre I've ever ridden, but I've never ridden a Vittoria, so YMMV.

cheap tyres are cheap tyres. They ride cheap. It's no shame to be cheap. But cheap is cheap

Thanks for the info. There is a no target race lite on the back in good nick but was thinking of changing as I'm not keen on the blur rib against the lilac frame.

So what are you saying vorsprung???

I'm saying if you fit Luganos or similar they are not as fast as Michelin Pro Race. They don't grip as well. Some cheap tyres are less puncture resistant too.

If you buy a tyre there are perhaps 5 factors: grip, durability, puncture resistance, speed, weight and cost

If you get a cheap tyre then usually it scores low on the other 4 factors

Considering that if you shop around you can get good tyres for around £20 and that the cheapest tyres are generally around £10 is it really a good idea to get cheap tyres?

My 4th best bike has Orange Rubino Pros on it. I got them because they were a) orange and b) on special offer. They were about £15. Although they don't grip well in the wet they are otherwise fairly good. Should I have got the cheaper vittoria tyres, also available in orange? No. It would be a false economy. If my bike had horrible tyres on it I probably wouldn't ride it.
