Daughter #1, the graduate has asked for '.... a pair of speakers like Dad's and a box' by which I translate as an amplifier with separate speakers. I will ascertain exactly what she means, but I'm 99% sure that's what she means.
So it's a Richer sounds job to me. Whilst much has possibly moved on since my Audiolab 8000A/Rogers Studio 1a days there is still much I recognise brand and model wise.

She's gonna be living in 1 room at Grandmas in London for the foreseeable future so mega wattage and killer bass is not on the cards. So kit probably mounted on chest of drawers/desk/dressing table.
Main sources will be MP3 from iPhone or from her Apple Mac, (but it wouldn't surprise me if she also went vinyl at some stage and I have an old Pioneer PL512D turntable I could donate).
Budget circa £200 ish. I'll use regular lighting cable not fancy stuff for starters.
Musically she listens to a pretty eclectic range of stuff but rarely Classical, Jazz or Country

I'm liking the Cambridge Audio stuff and (their amp with Phono stage (and remote control) at £169 might be worth it). However .... I'm really taken by the purist Musical Fidelity V90 which will only handle the laptop and MP3 player (maybe this is too limiting).

Alternatively there's this which has everything bar the kitchen sink .....

Speaker wise ... The JBL Control 1 or the Wharfdale Diamonds as both are magnetically shielded which seems a good thing.

Any thoughts/experience?

Never too old for big wattage and bass

If she's going to be living at Grandma's, good headphones? That way she can have an amp that goes all the way to 11 and as much bass as she wants - cos it's all about the bass, not treble

I always rated Pioneer kit, it's where I started, this looks good to me.
