Thanks roubaixtuesday a good suggestion [second hand]...but not having a car makes this next to impossible. I live in Brora.....

Most Ebay sellers and the like will courier, though a test ride might be challenging!

If you do go cycle camping on your current bike my two three suggestions would be whatever the smallest chainring you can get on there, largest cassette, and the strongest rear wheel you can get built by a touring specialist.

Will be brilliant, maybe just a few walks up steep bits worst case.

Anyone think i need stronger extra spoke wheels?

On this point, I learned last year touring on a tandem (200kg+ all up) that the quality of spokes, rim and build is more important than number of spokes.

We did 5,000 miles on 36 spoke wheels, one loose front spoke easily retensioned was the only issue.

I wouldn't, however, trust the wheels (particularly rear wheel) you have unless you're really sure of all of that.
