Building a garden gate... what's the best wood preserver?

As the title says... what's the best wood preserver for a garden gate?

I'll probably use treated timber but where there's a cut, the timber will need treating.

something as near to clear as i can get would be ideal, but with so many products on the market, all claiming to be the best... which ones have you tried?

what can you recommend and what should i avoid?

I bought some Ronseal stuff for the cut ends when I did some decking. Was completely clear. Seemed to work ok and was in the local b and q without having to go online.

Was a few years ago when decking was in fashion. lol

I use a clear decking oil. Don't buy from B&Q as it's way more expensive than an on-line supplier

I find that wood only rots where there's a water trap. Otherwise unprotected wood will survive for years.
