That's the whole point. New additions should never blend in with the old.

Maybe not, but they shouldn't overpower them, and can show a bit more relationship to them than just the shape. I think I'd find it more pleasing if it didn't try to grab the attention with the overhang... just a little bit of modesty would have gone a long way: I think my reaction would have been totally different had it been slightly recessed.

To me the big glass structure kind of disappears whilst being totally obvious at the same time. The Exeter one you mentioned just has a big box plonked on top which looks like it was always there when it wasn't, which to me is deceiving.

I guess we have different tastes. And that's good. I'd rather dislike a building than just go 'meh' at blandness.

I had a while in a fairly-recently cleaned CdG TGV station with some good light. It's a building I really like.

This defunct artists studio near Selkirk is either an eyesore or an important piece of architecture. Personally I'm in the eyesore group😆

This is the studio at High Sunderland designed by Peter Womersley. Our tastes obviously differ because I'd kill to live in such a property. Sadly I lack the funds, as does the current owner who bought it in the early 2000s to convert into a house but has left it to rot.

Postscript - I've just realised that Mrs B and I used to drive past this when we worked in the Borders back in the 90s. It was in much better nick back then. We're both fans of Womersley's work and always fancied Farnley Hey, near Huddersfield.
