Bunion -Corrective Surgery

Anybody had corrective survery on bunion(s)?

On one foot bunion growing and whilst it isn't painful, a chiropodist said it's the cause of sores on my next two toes as it's pushing them out of place.

What's making me think I might need to get it sorted is my next two toes have been getting increasingly numb which is now also developing such that my big toe is going numb on the outside (Dr. Google reliable sites say it can be a symptom of bunions as growth interferes with nerve).

Chiropodist said some people get operation when it's far more extreme than mine whilst others when less deflection than mine.

Anybody experience of surgery? Keyhole or traditional? NHS (UK) or private? Wondering about private costs as my luck NHS would call me for operation in spring and I'd lose entire summer cycling & walking to recovery.

Basically any experiences or thoughts?

Guess I am very lucky in not having any pain from it.

Once you have googled bunion. Your Facebook ( thats if you have one) pages will be full of none surgical apparent solutions to said bunion.

It's no help to you but my grandma had bunions for years and wouldn't let anyone operate on them: "I've never been in hospital in my life & I'm not starting now".

She always carried a spare pair of shoes in her handbag.

(Don't do Facebook). Mine are unusual (I believe) in that not causing pain but it's the loss of sensation that's the bigger issue together with walking any distance causes problems with next two toes.

Normal non-surgical stuff tried but don't need pain treatment as it's deflection affecting nerves. Tried wearing bunion things that are meant to slow development but they get uncomfortable due to nerve issues.

Shoes are not really my problem. I rarely wear shoes and cycling wear the Shimano sandals (SD5?). Chiropodist looked at my shoes and said they were fine and that you can't get too wide or you end up with feet flopping around and blisters.

Should be easy enough to get a quote to do it privately. Maybe 10k With consultations, imaging, op, post op physio if no PMI?

I know someone had it done and ended up with a relatively rare post operative nerve complication as a result called CRPS so educate yourself on the potential risks

Hi, I'm Marks Wife
I had bunions for years, I'm now 59, they became very painful. So back in June 22 I had both feet operated on at once, NHS. I was put under as both feet were done. I walked on my heels, with crutches, only when needed. My surgeon kindly took into consideration that I have the summer holidays off (I'm self employed & work in educaton) and my surgery was done late June. It took 9 weeks recovery and then a further few months before I was back to playing netball. It was painful the first 4 days after surgery, nerve pains but these passed and you should take the medication prescribed at regular intervals to get them into your system, which I probably didn't. I'm pleased that I had it done. I can cycle, play badminton and netball evey week. So my advice is to get it done as soon as possible. Facebook has a good bunion surgery page, which has lots of advice, with good and bad experiences.
