I learned a very colloquial style of speech with a lot of Andalusian expressions and the typical suppressed "S". Most of it has gone now because I haven't practised (this was 36 years ago!) whereas I have spent quite a bit of time working and holidaying in France so my French has stayed fluent.
Grenoble has the famous Institut D'Etudes Nucleaires where the Iranians were studying at the invitation of the French government (the same government who sold Exocet missiles to Argentina). We meanwhile were supposed to be attending lectures in political science at the Uni. However the first lecture was two hours on "the theory and concept of fetishism according to Freud and Marx" so we didn't attend many lectures after that, we just spent the time getting drunk and hitch hiking around getting drunk in other towns.
