Unless you don't have private transport and are forced to take the expensive option.

I've done my best to explain some of the considerations taken into account when setting the fares. I'm not going to attempt to explain why life isn't always fair.

It costs me 7 quid return to work (13 miles) no wonder I cycle everyday.

They all make choices, and live with the consequence of these.
They could choose to get a car or choose to move or choose not to travel.
If they choose to travel by another means then they pay whatever the going rate is.

If they are banned that is a consequence of an earlier choice.
You saying poverty is a choice?

If you are comparing the price of bus fares with using a car then in many places you also have to factor in parking costs. I have just paid £5.50 for a trip to Newcastle which would have been quicker and cheaper in the car but city centre parking costs would have significantly bumped up the price of car travel.

OTH I have just bought a 4-weekly ticket for the same journey for £78. If I use it only on weekdays (20 journeys) that's £3.90 per day to go to work.

I'm banned, from driving, due to a lifelong disability that I was born with. When did I get the chance to decide be born without the disability. No amount of tests done at the time would have revealed the disability either.

@Sara_H , sorry for hijacking your thread, just seeking clarification on choices.

£1.35. But if Ken was still in power it would only be £1

How far back are you going? The GLC Fares Fair policy in 1980 was deemed illegal, mainly due to tory intervention, so only lasted a year. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened, the congestion charge has gone some way to achieving what was envisioned. With large population centres you can engineer the differential and fill the buses and reduce the costs. It's not possible to do that on a service like Scarborough to RHB or any service in more rural areas.

I'm not saying poverty or disability is a choice; but people make choices and all choices have consequences. If you are poor you still have the ability to make choices, likewise with a disability.

Travel is not a 'right' and it involves making choices.

Don't be sorry, you're illustrating my point beautifully!

As it is, I don't have a car, but my OH does. We'd decided to go by bus/train for various reaon, one of which was teaching the kids that you don't need to rely on a car to get about.

I was banned before I was old enough to be able to get behind the wheel of a car. Consequence of a random event that left me born with a disability. I had no say or choice in the matter whatsoever.

This thread seems to have gone from the cost of bus fares to people using public transport. I`m lucky to live 2 miles from work and have a permanent job but some have to travel further and work for an agency on work often spread between different places in the same week or only working a few days a week.

Buses in my area are no good to most people trying to get to work by 6am unless they live in the city center as they start to late to get a bus into and another bus out of the city to arrive at work in time. Without a permanent job moving is out of the question so they are forced into using a car or bike weather they like it or not.
