Liverpool scrapped most of its bus lanes recently. Don't know about the Friday effect you mention though.

The OP did ask about London, but I found the link to bus lanes in Liverpool of interest.

In Durham, the few lanes are marked 'buses only', which strictly speaking means bicycles are not allowed to use them.

Never heard of anyone being done, but there are very few cyclists in the area.

Anyhow, back to bus lanes in that there London....

Looking on Google maps the hours of operation are between 4-8 p.m. Are they using the lane in between these times? If so then they should not be, I'm thinking if they are and it's a Friday afternoon then they are in a rush to get home?

Actually there are quite a few cyclists - mostly students I admit but they still count. Also I have noticed that many of the bus lanes in this area [and that includes Newcastle] are designated for the use of buses, cycles, m/cycles and in some cases delivery vehicles - just NOT private cars.

There are a lot of timed bus lanes in London, which cars can use out of hours.

It's another reason I love bus lanes: can also often use them to pass traffic in the car. :-) Hardly anyone reads the time plates.
When turning left from this road, most people will wait for traffic to clear and pull straight into the second lane. When the bus lane isn't in operation you can pull straight into the bus lane if it is clear. Not seen a single person do it but always saves me time.

Ah yes, the good old Brighton Road - often used that old chestnut myself. I only found that one out having moved into that area temporarily - could have kicked myself, but now it's one of those lovely things not many people know about. You can even park down the bus lane on the opposite side all day on a Saturday! Used to save me so many £££'s on all day parking!

Same here in Hull, bus lanes can be used majority of the day yet the majority of drivers don't use them.
I'm guilty of that, esp in a strange area...

But if I'm concentrating on the road, traffic, keeping an eye out for cyclists etc (while I'm in my car), I'd rather not have to read details on bus lane signs.
After all, that's why most signs are large symbols, so you can take in what they mean at a glance, rather than having to read things...
