I can't wait to go on the cable car at night! Oh - you'll be able to use Oyster on it. Fantastic!

If this works I can see these items criss-crossing London. Regents Park to Oxford Street. Bank to London Bridge Station. Victoria to Oxford Circus. Sloane Square to Harrods. Westminster to Perdition.

Anyroadup. Let's hear it for TfL. They get a bit of stick for not doing their best for cyclists (and they deserve it on CS5 and Blackfriars Bridge) but having a cable car that takes bikes is pretty darn spiffy!

When put like that it does sound somewhat interesting and way ahead of other cities.

Argh - when will the 'government' stop spending our money on stupid ideas.

1: It's going to be private funded (Del can probably confirm)
2: It's not a stupid idea at all due to the lack of decent river crossing in that particular part of London.

It's a neat idea but hardly a new one. Practically every weekend I seem to hear that the Jubilee Line has been "suspended between Stratford and North Greenwich" - I keep meaning to go and have a look, it must require a truly enormous amount of cable to keep it all up.

mmm, nice but how much pp ?
Some jobsworth will later decide that bikes won't be allowed. The crossing will now be known as Vince

I don't think the Government is spending money on it. TfL will spend money on it, and that will come out of the GLA precept, but they intend to recoup their investment.

I do agree with Deptfordmarmoset - the closures of the foot tunnel seem to be a bit random, and it is inconvenient if you want to cross on a weekend morning, but when you get on the ferry you are really treated like royalty. I'm not immune to pangs of guilt, knowing that vehicles have queued for an hour.

The Rotherhithe Tunnel is a trip and a bit. I used to go through it on the hybrid pretty much on a daily basis, and the combination of heavy bike, gradient on exit, traffic fumes, noise and work shirt did leave me feeling less than fragrant, so I don't miss it BUT it would make a great bus lane. Restrict traffic to the small buses and cycles, and you'd up the carrying capacity of the tunnel, because the combination of the roundabout at the southern end and the traffic lights at the northern end limits the car traffic to not very much.
The Woolwich ferry is one of those little hidden freebie gems that London has to offer.

What happens when it gets really windy on cable cars?

They'll swing about a bit

I'm amazed at how people dislike the Rotherhithe tunnel - it's fun on a bike, and I've no idea why people find it scary. Take the lane and enjoy the ride through there. I'm less keen on the stinky fumes, but they're not that awful.

Link?

Edit:
Just found a link HERE

to be fair its moving the ferry along a bit and its only a suggestion at present. still wouldn't be good and with all the current blackwall closures the woolwich ferry has had service stepped up at these weekends to cope.

The blackwall was shut this weekend as a cyclist had gone through it , travel news was full of it .
