Hi,

Last week I made a post about stiff gear/break usage. Anyway, today I decided to change my bar tape - I removed it and found this...

Because the photo is not great, Iv colour coded it to better illustrate the issue...

The green is the actual cable housing, the yellow is the cable, and the red is what I think might be a problem...the red is the metal weave from inside the cable housing thats come loose of the housing somehow.. Anyway, is this normal?

Hmmm...

Im not an expert, so please double check my advice, but...

That dont look right to me. From memory when I re-cabled my roubaix (with shimano 105 5700) the bit that you have in red is where there should be a ferrule fitted.

If you have a look at this tech doc, find the "Installation of the shifting cable" section, have a look at the diagram just under point 3, there is a ferrule on the cable in that.

http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/t...01/SI-6SE0A-002-ENG_v1_m56577569830702960.pdf

My roubaix wasnt very old before the shifting went dogey, and I doubted the cables would be the problem. However, after advice from on here I changed them and all was tickerty-boo. A also squirted a bit of wd-40 sown the old cables and was suprised at the ammount of swarf and rust that came out.

If your inners are coming out the end then either the installer was a bodge merchant, or the cable is well passed its best (and the ferrule has been magically worn away leaving no trace!) I got a relacement set of outers from decathlon and that does the 2 cables from the shifter, and the bit at the rear derailier. Less than a tenner for shimano outers.

OOOPSIE!!!

Just read your other post and you fitted them yourself...

Perhaps the "installer was a bodge merchant" phrase could have been more diplomatically worded...

No worries, I installed the entire groupset, im suprised it went as smoothly as it did to be honest with you

anyway, thanks for pointing out the mistake, Ill swap the cable/cable housing out and fix some ferrules - Not sure how I missed it to be honest!
