I think this may have been a link someone posted here, but I can't find the thread and can't find the article linked to!

I've been offered as many cable ties as I can handle by the IT department at work and am tempted to give it a shot - Article suggested wrapping a cable tie around the wheel between each spoke does a pretty effective job of giving you grip in the snow and ice. As my bike has disc brakes this shouldn't give me any problems, just might be a bit of a hassle taking them off if it doesn't work!

Don't have the nous nor the tools to try making my own snow tyres with pop rivets or screws.

Anyone know if this method is actually at all effective?

Not sure I would trust it without seeing it in action first - intuition suggests the plastic would slide over sheet ice. Maybe there's some Youtube vid of it working?

I'd just found the article and came to post the link but you beat me to it ;)

Found some talk of it on another forum and suggestion was the plastic would ping off after a while and you'd have to keep replacing them.

Worth a shot ... just worried I'd find myself stranded somewhere after they all stop working!

Thinks ... maybe I could combine it with some thin chain?

your missing the idea, you use the locking mechanism part to grip the ice if your bike starts to slip. in theory it should work.

Yeah I did read that bit, although would a plastic locking mechanism really dig into ice once the bikes already sliding? I dunno, maybe so. Would like to see someone else try it first
