Next time try using the padded insert in your bib longs. Far better insulation than a mere hat.

Personally I think the cafe owner is bang on. I wouldn't be happy knowing my pot of tea has come into contact with someones sweaty hat before me. It is just gross regardless of it is washed or not.
Anyway if it is going cold you can always ask for some hot water to top the pot up.

I'm surprised she lets you put the mugs of tea to your lips or the cake fork into your mouth. You'll catch more illnesses via someone else's mouth than from cosying your hat. It's simply non-standard behaviour that shouldn't be prohibited using spurious sanitary reasons.

Where I come from this would be generally frowned upon, in fact even putting hats (and helmets) on tables where people eat is usually a no-no. Can argue all day about cleaning etc of course but as the thread says, it's etiquette.
