On this evening's ride I spotted what I thought was a very cheeky addition to the local street furniture. This...

It looked like the householder had just plonked their bike storage on the road (and part of the pavement) in front of their house.

I checked on Streetview when I got home and saw that it has been there since at least June last year. It eventually dawned on me that the council would have had a stern chat with them by now if it had been done without permission, so I searched to see if such permission could be granted...

I found that the council itself is responsible for it, and plans more such hangars. Details HERE.

Hundreds of them there.Not sure how much they cost to store a bike. But I suppose it varies from borough to borough.

Brilliant. If car drivers can use the kings highway for storage purposes then cyclists should also be afforded the same privilege. Top marks to the LA concerned.

Yes, I noticed that. I don't think it was necessary to do that there since the hangar takes up less space than some of the large cars parked nearby.

It doesn't look quite big enough for the quoted 6 bikes. We are supposed to have got one here but I have never noticed it. I will see if I can find it and check it out close up.

Presumably bikes are parked perpendicular to the pavement/road? It doesn't look long enough in that dimension, but presumably it must be since the other way around it would not be high enough. Do fill us in on such things when you find one to examine more closely.

That sounds more affordable than the Road.cc headline would have you to believe. They were claiming the folk who needed them most, were being priced out.

Just had a check. Here in my work place London Borough of Lewisham, where as I said, they're all over the place. Cost is £66 a year and £25 deposit.

As you can see from their map of my locality, there's a fair few. Green ones in my postcode with spaces.

They are like the Tardis! The one in Mytholmroyd really didn't look as big as that when I cycled past it.

Calderdale are only charging £30 a year and a £20 deposit for the key.

I'm not sure how old the article is that I quoted from. However, according to this article £120 was more expensive than other places and Cardiff Council have reduced the prices.

I imagine there are a number of car drivers non cyclists getting all uppity, with no hint of irony, about these hangers reducing available on street car parking, yet refusing to park their SUV in their understairs cupboard.
