Why is it that even these people can't get their seasons right? It really annoys me when I hear people talk about summer at this time of the year. Summer starts on June 21st, which is also the longest day of the year. Let it be known that we are still in SPRING till then. Summer runs from June to September.

Meteorologically wise Summer does start on the 1st June. They take three month blocks from the first of the month.

If summer starts on 21st June, how come 21st of June is Midsummer's Day?

Of course it's summer now. It's June. June is summer.

Dec Jan Feb is winter.

Fact.

Here's a pleasant ditty from the Style Council, dealing with the passage of the seasons and personal growth and development. It's a lovely song, I think.

Interesting article and it confims that there are in fact more than one way of defining when the seasons start and end. I daresay that most people instinctively believe that 10th of June is summer not spring, like the 10th of December is winter not autumn. The 'astronomical calendar' by which summer is deemed to start only on the 21st June etc. is just a useful convention in some parts of the academic and official world, but it hasn't had the effect of actually shifting the seasons by 3 weeks, the weather still does its own thing. I for one will be sticking with the 'common sense' definition of summer as June-July-August.
