I was talking to Simon King , the great nature photographer, at longleat a few weeks back . I apologised for only having my iPhone 6 to take a pic of him and my family as I had the long lens on my PEN. He said that no need as the iPhone camera is as good as or better than most compacts.

I would take his advice over anybody here.

Depends on the "compact"

I use either my Stylus 1s or SZ31MR as my "pocket camera" The letter is truly "Pocketable" but the former needs a jacket pocket

Both use essentially the same software and abilities as the PEN EPL5, save the permanent zoom lens

If you are googling cameras over the festive period then spare 15 minutes for Sigma cameras.

Absolutely awful to work with (short battery life/fixed lens/no tilt screen/crappy post-processing) but the special sensor they have gives you results beyond most other cameras.

Using one you realise that most cameras "guess" colours and very small details, so giving some non-lifelike results. The Sigma's also look pretty funky too!

About 4 years ago I bought the entry level Nikon DSLR, the D3100. It's been fine. Besides the kit lens, I have the 35mm F1.8 prime and a compatible flash unit.

My other cameras are a Nikon P330, as a go anywhere decent quality compact and a Canon SX50, for wildlife mainly.

If I had my time again I think I'd get a Canon DSLR. Not because there's anything wrong with the Nikon, but because I find it frustrating that when looking for secondhand Sigma or Tokina lenses, there always seem to be 15 Canon fit examples for every one Nikon. I'd really like a 10-20mm or similar, and I could've had a Canon one many times over.

I use 4/3 most the time now for my general days out camera (Olympus OMD1) with a few primes in my pocket, the beauty with 4/3 is its small lightning fast and fast primes that you can put in your pocket. For more serious stuff when I venture out alone I take a full frame Nikon with a stash of fast primes, heavy. When I go out purely to landscape photograph I take a 5x4 large format with a few wide angle primes and half a dozen sheets of velvia slide film and a load of filters. For me personally there isn't a one camera solution for my interests.

With cell phone cameras being so good I can't see ever buying a compact camera again.

I came across an overturned car a few months ago. There were a couple of people helping the driver get out and about twenty more standing on their doorsteps filming it on their phones.
That's not to do with the device though is it. That's to do with scum .

Oh pardon me im sure....just because someone famous says phones take better pictures than cameras dont mean its true. The last time i looked most pros use expensive full frame dslrs.

There you go again jumping about testiculating and not reading posts properly.

DSLR has its place. But at normal tog level nah.

It's the same as MAMIL and his 5k carbon bike for Surrey roads .

Your condescending attitude frankly stinks and shows you for what you really are .
Username play gives it away.

I think the point it that cell phones today can produce photos as good if not better than most compact cameras. No one is suggesting that a cell phone could replace a new DSLR.
