English thread, not oversize tubes. The Centaur BB comes in two sizes, 111mm and 115mm. I've read somewhere that you only need the 115mm for oversize tubes, and elsewhere that you need the 115mm for all triples and the 111mm is for the double.

Anyone got a definitive answer?

My understanding is that the 115 is for all triples and some higher end doubles (record etc) - all the others use 111.

I've just put together a 9 speed triple with a 115 bb and it works fine. If you want to make sure, let me know the width of your bb shell and I'll compare it.

Due to different vintage/models having different requirements, the answer to your question is no such general simple rule exists.

For example, older Campag chainsets require bb's with offset spindles, while the new ones are symmetric. Triples always 115mm? I have this 111mm triple bb on one of my bikes.

In the era of square taper BB's Chorus and upwards used either a 102mm or a 111mm for a double or a triple respectively. These were asymmetric BB's. Centaur and below use symmetric BB's 111mm for a double or a triple on a frame where the seat tube is 28.6mm. If the seat tube's fatter than 28.6mm Mr Campag said you needed a 115mm BB to stop the front mech fouling on the seat tube when you changed onto the little ring. In my experience this was a bit cautious and you could often get away with a 111mm. A week ago I put a Race triple chainset and front mech on a bike with a 34.9mm seat tube with a 111mm BB - it worked fine.
