Most of the innovations they ban are developed by relatively small companies. They can't afford to upset the two biggest equipment suppliers in the business.

It's just another type of shifter, not anything new, bikes have had shifters for a looong time.

SRAM were first with electronic gears, back in 1994 with Speedtronic. Developed only for MTBs it died a death pretty quickly.

Isn't it Sachs and Sedis plus a few others all merged together?

My mistake, I thought Mavic were later than '93.

It was indeed under the Sachs name that Speedtronic came out. Nothing new under the sun, as they say.

Proof of the pudding, and all that. If they work through the training camps, and it's wet, then good. Personally I can't see the point with cable setups being light and accurate. Still, it will sell product to the bike fashionistas, and as a pro you generally use whatever kit you get issued.

Every gearshift system made was light and accurate...till something lighter, quicker and more accurate came along. It's all race driven, every tiny advantage can make a difference between winning and losing and the trickle down effect as prices drop eventually see most of us adopting the new technology.
