Campag Mirage (Old) cassette removal, chain etc help!

My winter bike has a campag mirage triple groupset and its creaking a bit to say the least. It is about 15 years old though so probably understandable.
Firstly I want to regrease the rear bearings so I assume I'll need a cassette removal tool etc. Is there a decent website tutorial on how to do this?
On a set this old should I be thinking of chain and cassette replacement too? Not sure if it's best to get the tools and go down the DIY route or use my LBS, any advice, suggestions etc appreciated.

Here you go, most excellent website http://bicycletutor....ssette-cluster/

Replacement will depend on wear and tear and if you are replacing the rear cassette then you will probably need to replace the chain and front chain rings as well. This will depend on how much the chain has stretched

Have a look 1/2 way down this page http://www.sheldonbr...hains.html#wear for "chain and sprocket wear" as well as "measuring chain wear"

If the Mirage cassette is 15 years old then it will be a one-piece jobby if my memory serves me well. You undo the locknuts with a spanner, take out the axle, then pull the cassette off and get to the bearings in the hub.

If the cassette is more modern 4F's approach is correct.

The main problem if it is a one-piece block is getting it back on - you'll need a rubber band and some floss.

Not quite - if it is mid to late 90's then the cluster doesn't screw on but rather sits on the hub which also houses the pawls and is held in place by the lock nuts.

It was a design unique to the Mirage - quite why I have no idea!

aha you learn something every day, I am now pleased my Mirage groupset is not quite as old

Blimey! Its definetly not threaded as it's got the bulge on the sprocket side (Sheldon Browns page on identifying them shows this as a method of identifying the types) so I assume it still requires the cassette/lockring tool and chain whip? Or just chuck the blooming thing in the skip and buy new!

You mean a bulge in the hub? - yes that's the old type.

You don't need a chainwhip or lockring tool - a pair of spanners will do if you are feeling brave!

Just had a thought -is it 8spd or 9spd we are talking about here?

Clearly I can see its now a freewheel, so that chain whip I ordered was a waste!

That be a bit more modern than 15 years old- it' a freehub with individual sprockets/spacers making up the cluster. At a guess I'd say it dates back to around 2000.

So you will need your chain whip!(and cassette removal tool)

Go back to 4F's original bicycletutor link.

I'd check the teeth on the cassette whilst you're at it.

Thanks pete, so the chain whip and cassette removal tool will come in useful after all.

You mention checking the cassette, would a later model 9 speed fit on OK if available? Mirage 9's seem unobtainable but Miche seem to have a compatible one

Firstly I'd say that I'm only hoping that Campag have kept the same spline design (the grooves onto which the cassette slides) and the same lockring thread size - if they have then you should find Mirage cassettes on eBay or alternatively get a Veloce cassette which will work equally as well if not better. You need one with a 12t or 13t lockring.

If you also need a chain then a 9spd Campagnolo Record is the one to go for.

Personally I have found Miche products to be not very hard wearing.

Tha saga continues! On removal and lifting off of the freehub a couple of the springs and pawls displaced and putting them back is not easy! In addition the spindle running through the hub has definite wear marks, I'm unsure if its wise to even try to have a go at the bearings they seem sealed but I'm sure thet're not.

This is going from a saga to a drama by the minute!
