Hey,

I posted elsewhere about a 2nd hand bike falling to bits. Spokes, Indexing, both shot.

Anyways, it's been serviced, feels better, but Ive been told that I have Campag shifters and Shimano everything else, ad that they're never going to see eye to eye.

I dont doubt the truth in this, but I am
looking to make good. Could ditching a front ring help? Is that possible? Could switching out 1 rear component help? Looking for clean, consistant shifting, not miracles.

Cheers,

Lee

Its its the index lengths that are different between the two systems. I can't remember if there is a solution, but there's a good thread in technical & know how on the subject. If you can't find the thread let me know, I'll search for it for you and post you up a link.

Campag 10 speed pulls the same cable per click as is needed to work Shimano 8 speed, and works perfectly. It also works with Shimano 9 speed if you clamp the cable in the correct non-standard manner - see above CTC link.

If the bike shop just clamped the cable normally, they would have trouble getting the indexing right. Some shops know, and you can even buy new bikes with a Campag/Shimano mix, but it's really a touring bike thing and I can see a lot of shops would just go by the book.

Ach, some of this seems like more hassle than it's worth....

A quick test ride showed that I can now ony use the biggest 3 sprockets when on the small front ring, and the smallest 3 sprockets when on the front big ring. Anything bar those 6 combos results in loud chain
rub on the front mech.

I know it's a 2nd hand bike but I did expect a better fix. Any opinions on whether I should put up and shut up, or ask for better.

You'll have to excuse my patchwork terminology knowledge, I'm learning as I go.

Cheers

Ermmm...I thought the whole idea of Campag front shifters was that they aren't indexed - you can push the lever a little bit and move the front mech a little, and that should get rid of any chain rub?

How many sprockets on the cassette? Chain rub on the front mech has nothing to do with indexing, but is more to do with chainline. General advice is not to use extremes such as big front/big rear, small front/small rear. May well find such combinations duplicate other combinations anyway. Have a look at a gear chart. May also be possible to 'trim' the front mech by small movement of the shifter - this moves the mech slightly to cure chain rub.

(Edit: +1 TheDoctor above)

I've no idea on the difference between Campag and Shimano anythings.

7 rear sprockets. Chain didn't rub to this extent before the 'service'. I think they moved the front mech to improve shifting - it shifted randomly before. Gears now say where they are told to, but I have less to
play with.

I intend to get a new bike inside 2-3 months. Maybe I should just deal with it and be happy it's only £100 spent including the service.

It was all there, but it got a lot more complicated since that was written.
Campag keep changing things, some across the range, some on certain groupsets, QS, Escape, Ultrashift... not to mention the playing around with the spring tension in the mechs. There is no longer a definitive Shimano/Campag mix answer. You need to know all the details to get it right.

Just how old are you two?

If you want a slanging match that's fine with me, just not in Know How - PLEASE.

2 comments hardly represents a slanging match now does it? Considering your comment contributed nowt to my technical issue I could add your comment to the 'slanging match' and this comment, and any reply... And so on...

I was looking for shifting help, if you think 2 off topic comments stop you from doing that, fair play, don't comment.

Someone mentioned biketutor in one of your other posts.

I used it today to play with my V breaks and also did some front derailleur tuning.
Its quite helpful. Visuals help with the terminology. I'm like a V Break specialist now.

Go see...
