I used this
http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/en/europe/
last year in the main but it did let me down occasionally.
After that I started asking the campsite I was in to check the next site and they either knew, or had a better, more accurate book that did.

It is often the case that campsites in Spain are few and far between, and only slightly cheaper than a roomin a hotel. We paid €40 per night for hotel rooms all the way from Gib to Toledo in January, and saw a handful of campsites in a fortnight. I would suggest the extra weight of camping kit is not worth carrying.

We'll use cheap hotels as and when we have to, but prefer to camp when the weather is nice (which is a fairly safe bet for Spain in August). We were paying around 15 euro for campsites last year so over three weeks it still adds up to quite a lot extra when you factor in having to eat in a restaurant every night.
Also, we've got three weeks to get from Barcelona to Santander so a meandering route based on where there are campsites will be fine, especially as they're mostly sited in the nicest bits and national parks anyway.

Cobblers (if you'll excuse my use of the vernacular!) - we paid between 10 and 15 euros a night for excellent sites in Spain last year and there were plenty to choose from. Camping is an entirely different (and better) touring experience too, especially if you're like me and Dave who like to chill our beers and wine bought from the local supermarket.
If you factor in not only camping v hotel prices, but also shop bought booze and the ability to cook your own meals, morning tea etc there is a considerable difference in cost.

Actually Rich, I'm in the process of designing and building a bike towable wind/solar powered fridge. It's coming in at about 40kg at the moment and the turbine blade will cause a bit of drag, but it will be well worth the effort IMO (especially as I intend to attach it to Mrs D's bike).

Dave, I cycled across France/Spain in October last year and found campsites thin on the ground. Route here www.julian2012.co.uk - I only found one on my route at a time I wanted to stop (lovely one in Logrono) but they either tend to be rough town-based ones or lovely but in the middle of nowhere. So look carefully ahead. The one I stayed at was 13€, so a lot pricier than France, and hotels were as low as 20€ with bathroom and wifi. I ended up sending the camping kit home.

Buen viaje

and by the way a Spanish "hostal" is not a hostel. It is a small hotel/pension. Hotels are better quality but there is a lot of overlap. In Burgos I got a 4 star hotel for 55€ a night

I'm not planning a fixed route but using various websites and google maps to mark up Michelin regional maps with campsites and a few notes of distances etc. I've got to about half way so far and it's looking ok, with a fair bit of zig zagging about, which is fine.

Spain is great for wild camping but hard for "normal" cycling (cheap & not many amenities required) camping.

You can get room above bar for 15/20 euros, no problem, or a hostal as described by Jay for 25 ish, (2 twin beds). I quite like camping but I don't think there is a saving to be made in Spain, so I'd rather have a comfy bed, the bike in the room and be around lots of bars & life. I'd often choose to pay more if there was a buffet breakfast that I was able to stuff my face with a.n.d take enough away for lunch too!

Here is my trip across Spain last year, the room costs are at the bottom of every page.

Agreed, which is why we took the €9 lunches during the day and then went to a shop amd bought a picnic style meal for the evening which we ate in the hotel room, while drinking shop-bought beer and wine. The gas stove and pot was used to boil water to make a decent cuppa, usually in the bathroom so we didn't set off the smoke alarm. So food-wise, using a hotel was not really more expensive than camping. The room cost a bit more than camping, which is what a lot of people told us before we went, but we had the advantage of not carrying camping kit on the bike. And when it gets hot in Spain, it gets really hot, so carrying camping kit would be a real pain, as would being in a tent on a hot afternoon or night instead of being in a hotel room with an aircon unit, which they all had.

Each to his own. I don't want to divert Dave's thread into a hotel v camping debate but suffice to say I cycled from the south to the north last summer in hot heat and I'd much rather be cooking outside and using the pool etc. It's all a matter of choice though.

That does sound nice Rich and to have done 50/50 would have been perfect, but, without a planned route (I never have one) it's difficult to find a campsite in Spain when you want one, plus, there is such a great choice of good cheap rooms. When I do the North coast, Bilbao round to Vigo, I'll camp most of the way.
