Can I take a bike on the Cork to Dublin train?

Hello!

I'm planning a 750 mile ride in Ireland in June. The final leg involves a train trip from Cork (Kent) back to Dublin...it's not clear to me on the train website whether cycles are permitted on the train....would welcome others' experience on this please.

Cheers

Both Cork and Dublin in the same country?

If that's the case, going on what someone else posted, you should have no problems.

There's a small tag in place on this thread, ireland, just under the thread title. Click on that for further ideas.

Here it is
Absolutely none - it was great - rock up at Dublin Station -no booking ahead) ask for ticket to Cork plus bike (there were four of us) - no problem. Directed us to where bikes go - a goods carriage where (very helpful & friendly - not your typical miserable British type) conductor loaded bikes (there were lots) in order of where you were getting off. The tag on your bike corresponds to your ticket so nobody can nick it. Go find a seat nearby. Sorted. They also have a great system of bikes you can hire at a station and drop it back at another station

@Lerryn, Cousin was correct. There is now a booking system in operation on ALL intercity trains.

Bicycles on InterCity Trains
Iarnrod Éireann welcome bicycles on all of our services but some restrictions apply during peak travel times. There is no charge for booking or travelling with a bicycle onboard any of our services. Bicycles that are folded and covered can be carried on all services free of charge.

All InterCity trains have bicycle carriage facilities. The majority of Dublin to Cork services and all of the Dublin to Belfast trains have bicycle storage that are located in an area separate from the passenger compartment of the train. On all other InterCity routes the bicycle spaces are within the passenger compartment. Bicycle spaces for Intercity services must be booked, in advance, online at www.irishrail.ie.

Services into Heuston Station (Intercity services and Portlaoise commuters)

With services at capacity during peak travel time for Customers, bicycles are not permitted during the following times for journeys into/out of Heuston station from Monday - Friday unless the bicycle is booked on Intercity services only in advance on-line. Our journey planner will show the intercity services that can be booked in advance online.
  • Services arriving into Heuston station between 07.00hrs to 09.30hrs.
  • Services departing from Heuston station between 16.00hrs to 19.00hrs.

When were you thinking of taking the train? The route can get busy, Saturday mornings in particular and the weekend of big sporting/cultural events; so if you are sure of your timing, it would do no harm to book well in advance if you can. Moreover, last minutes fairs can be a bit pricey.

He should be safe, Cork won't make Dublin this year.
