this massive chainring( 3rd one along) (i.e. a better explanation than 'it'll help them to go faster')
Plus, I guess this has to be a caption competition too.

Taking no. 1 as the chap on the left:
It looks as if 1's chain ring is connected to 2's, so 1 and 2 are effectively on a tandem, and then the other chain around 2's chain ring goes right to the back wheel. Similarly 3 and 4 are pedaling together. So the big chain ring is an additional bit to help the chain from 2's ring get to the rear wheel.

Maybe...

Except now that I look closer, that isn't what is happening!

3rd rider from front is saying "Mine's bigger than your's"
4'th rider replies : aye, your enormous ring's the only thing I can see from here...

I think all 4 are linked by the standard smaller rings (the one hanging off the back's link is switched over to the left/front). But then number 3 has the drive from the four lots of pedals onto the wheel. I am guessing that 4x pedallers = 4x torque so it will need a big ring to stop them pedalling against nothing.

1 & 2 are driving with 3 and it then goes to the wheel.

3 & 4 are driving on the left side of the frame and to the wheel on the LHS.

So it looks like 3 is the Main Man's position ! :training:

1 & 2 are driving together. as are 2 & 3. All three on the Right side
3 & 4 are driving together on the left side, with the final drive, to the rear wheel, coming from the third riders posistion. Smaller chainring on the inside of the the large one, just visible in the picture.
Ridden once & they are a bugger to ride.
