There is only one they can do for £650. It's Giant so I know a good make but ultimately not that much different to the Boardman. They've said if I take the Boardman down there they will set it up correctly for me which is a plus and I'll definitely be buying all my gear from them in future like when I get SPD's etc

The Giant one is called:- 2013 Giant Avail 3

that is at least as good a bike as the boardman, and arguably better.

I wouldn't buy another bike from Helfrauds. And i wish i had joined this forum before getting a bike from there so then i wouldn't have wasted my C2W voucher !

I hope you recommend your new found lbs to any potential friends who are getting in to cycling. Good luck with the new bike and don't settle for anything less than 100 % comfort.

Oh without a doubt. It's definitely been a learning curve, not to mention that the specialist shops are closer to my house than Halfords so I'll be going to them for anything I need. This forum is amazing though, being able to talk to everyone in the know ;)

Just gotta decide now if i get clip ins tomorrow or I wait for a bit longer and get set up tomorrow in my trainers...can't decide!

Halfords don't have anyone qualified to fit folk to bikes properly. It's an art actually, and they are just box shifters. It's a damn shame as Boardman bikes are great, but are sold via a shop that sells £99 bits of crap.

Bought two bikes in Halfords - in boxes. Sized them myself for my kids. Wasn't leting their mechanics loose on them. I've seen them in action.

Yeah that's so true. It's such a shame that the Boardman bikes can't be sold somewhere else like Evans or online or something.

good luck! learn your lesson from this and dont go buying a mans bike, twice, in the wrong size, without taking someone with you who knows what theyre doing!!

or any bike, for that matter. i have to say i think halfords have beeen very good with you as you clearly opted to buy the bike without really thinking or doing your research.

hope the new ladies one gives you many years of riding pleasure, having said all that

ps, the lump behind the knee could just be a bite or something.

Hhmm. I'm fully prepared to take responsibility for not 'knowing my stuff' and I've never denied that side of it but as a company selling a very good quality bike, they should have known better and challenged it. I shouldn't 'have' to know about bikes to buy one as normal prcocess is that you take advice from the specilaists in the shop you're in. I had no idea Halfords had a bad rep and I also didn't come across this website until the purchase had already been made.

My gripe with the whole thing was that the manager 'apparently' didn't think I should take the second bike but didn't once approach me to talk to me face to face about it or to size me up.

Thank you, so do I! Looks like it is the right size this time. Lump on my knee is soft tissue damage of some sort, something for the physio to sort.

Yeah it looks good. I'll be tempted to get a Giant or Specialized next time.

But then Boardgirl will have to change her name to Giantgirl!

My wife really wanted the Boardman Ti ladies bike, but ended up with a Specialized due to the ineptness of halfords.

Good luck with the bike.

Get to know your LBS, in the long run they will be a godsend.

This is interesting. I am a 6' woman and I slightly annoyed that female bike sizing guides only tend to go up to 5'10" women. Obviously all women must stop growing at this point, something my parents failed to tell me. (This also applies to pretty shoes and long trousers. Anyway, I digress...)

I want to get a new bike as I currently have the Boardman Fi Comp (hybrid, for girls) and I want a road bike. Don't really mind what brand, just can't work out if there would be much difference between me getting the largest size of a woman's bike and a mans bike for 6' tall man. Some sizing guides just say that the only difference is smaller handle bars so that the teeny tiny women can hold on, and a slightly lower crossbar so that the teeny tiny women with voluminous skirts don't embarrass themselves swinging their legs over (ooer).

Any thoughts people? Many thanks

It's not just women's bike Halfords mis-size. My cyclocross that I bought from them they sized up for me - they got me a small, which is a 51.5cm.

The LBS looked at it and said it was too small for me - though luckily, I could fix this to some degree with a raised seat post, and a longer stem. I paid for a proper bike fit on it, and I'm glad I did.

For an idea how far off they were, my proper bike I bought straight from the LBS. It's either a 56 or 58cm (can't remember now which!).

That's interesting as I was told to order this size by one LBS and then took it into another LBS after receiving it and they said they thought it fitted fine and that I just needed the saddle adjusting etc

hun, it makes no difference whether it's a "man's" bike or a women's specific design. i'm a girl and been riding a "man's" bike for all of my cycling "career" (10 years), and i've commuted about 35,000 miles in that time. i've never had a problem with injuries or strains. the problem is the size of the bike, not which gender its specific to.

the general difference between men and women's specific bike is the length of the top tube. however, just because your a woman does not mean that you will automatically need a shorter top tube, as its generally about an inch difference, and the difference can often be sorted out with a shorter stem, flipped upside down (which is what i have done to all my "man's" bikes)... (not forgetting an inch wider saddle!)

so if they are talking about you should have had a Women's specific bike and that is clearly the problem, then they clearly have NO IDEA of sizing or bike fit and are talking bollox and should refund your money or you will be talking to head office about a compensation claim for your injuries right? Then take your money to a real bike shop and get the bike you want (whether it be a "man's" bike or women's specific) and get the shop to give you right size and make the appropriate adjustments.
