I saw a similar one farcebook t'other day... Imma wonder if it's a carefully constructed gif that actually does reverse the direction every now and again?

Nope. A clever person explained how it works but I've forgotten what she said. If I remember I'll ask her tomorrow. And then forget again after consuming a quantity of beer at the rugby!

Try this.

When you are watching it turn your head from side to side. Every time your head moves the train changes direction.
.... and if you move your head fast enough you can make the train stop
Imagine it as door- no door-door-no door. The door and no door segments are the same length. Each frame moves the train (it doesn't matter which way) the distance of the length of one segment, so where there was a door there's now no door, and vice versa. The next frame returns them. So your brain can join the frames to make it look like the train is going in either direction.

Or summat like that. It's hurting my eyes now.
Yeah that sounds familiar. I'm sure there's a proper word for it, I'll find out tomorrow. Maybe.
