This horrified me at the time. A lot of British content appeared on Australian TV and I'd often sit and watch with my parents. I wouldn't stay in the room when this was on.

Was it really acceptable, even in the 70s?

(I'm not saying Australian TV is perfect.)
I was completely unaware of how offensive it was at the time and Love Thy Neighbour, Benny Hill, Please Sir was borderline dodgy. Mind Your Language, On the Buses Guess there is a reason none of these are on Dave! Would have been 12ish at a guess.

Is it? My Dad loved that, and unfortunately he had the nickname of Alf Garnett at home.

Olive was a looker though.

Assuming you are being sarcastic, why single her out?

A friend who lived in there until recently, was telling me how appalled he was when they released a film called Wog, and then Wog 2, I believe.

That word have been reclaimed in Australia. I'd explain it, but last time I did my account was suspended.

Similarly there was an outcry from people who had lived in the UK when they advertised a test cricket series with "the Pakis are coming". Shocking if you are British, but it's not used that way on Australia, so it was just an abbreviation. Got taken off, of course - I'd assume most Pakistani cricketers would recognise it as an insult.

Have we done sweets made to look like fags yet? I used to love those.

On another note- (again sorry if covered upthread) I saw a piece on the news recently where the reporter handed kids a portable radio and asked them to tune it in (on FM too- a band I still think of as modern!) - none of them bar one managed it and one kid held it upside down. Sigh.
