No, plates were left on top of the gas fire (Cannon Miser?) to warm through for when we got back with the chips - probably because even with the fire on the house was blooming freezing...

Irish relatives sending a parcel of shamrock over for St Patrick's Day, which mum used to keep fresh in a bowl of water on the kitchen windowsill, then wearing a cardboard harp, with a green-white-and-gold ribbon, and a sprig of shamrock to school

We also did it in Bolton. As a kid my dad used to send me to the chippy on Friday night with a bowl. His theory was that you got more if you went with a bowl. What he didn't know and I never told him was the woman behind the counter measured out the chips in a tray before pouring them into dads bowl and he therefore got the same portion as everyone else.
