did anyone else go the chippy on Friday tea time and take your own plates or is/was that just a wigan thing

No, plates were left on top of the gas fire (Cannon Miser?) to warm through for when we got back with the chips - probably because even with the fire on the house was blooming freezing...

Open coal fires.
Making toast with a toasting fork in front of the coal fire.
As a small child having the weekly bath in a galvanised bath in front of the open fire, and the smell of towels being warmed on the fireguard.

We also did it in Bolton. As a kid my dad used to send me to the chippy on Friday night with a bowl. His theory was that you got more if you went with a bowl. What he didn't know and I never told him was the woman behind the counter measured out the chips in a tray before pouring them into dads bowl and he therefore got the same portion as everyone else.
