Can you put a tapered steerer into a frame that's originally got a straight one?

I have a voodoo hoodoo and am wanting to upgrade the forks to some rock shox. The original fork has a straight steerer and I am wanting to know if you can change it for a fork with a tapered steerer?

Won't one end be too big to fit?

That was what I was thinking but didn't want to post as I don't have much in the way of mechanical skills, but I presume the head tube for a tapered steerer would also be tapered???????

You can get adaptors the other way around but most tapered forks are bigger than the 11/8 standard so it's not possible to fit a tapered fork.

Sometimes it works but I find those times correlate heavily with when I've tried different frames.
