Presumably the inside of the cable is metal too ? Used plenty of metal ferrules and don’t recall much noise

Along the down tube are the gear cables. Maybe the noise isn’t them but it could be having two metals touching.

If it's a gear cable stick plastic on it. If the noise goes then great. If it doesn't it ain't that.
