It's a canal.

I did the Kennet and Avon from Pewsey to Reading last Friday and, by heck, it might be a canal but it was hard riding at times. Grass or hard packed gravel with big climbs at each lock.

Thank you Dan Bo, yes it was a long way, and it got longer the longer I walked!!! I think it is the remains of keeping up with the lads on club runs years ago that made me determined to do it. I may even have spoken to you.

Thank you so much for the donation SavageHoutkop. I will tell Ben and his mother Sharon that a complete stranger (other than being aa forum member) donated. Yes, I think you might be able to do it on a Brompton but there are some areas that are a bit stony and uneven - but you could just get off. There is a good train service from Todmorden to Manchester, every hour. I might even think of doing it myself, maybe on a Birdy before I sell it.

I've taken the train up to Todmorden before. My grandparents came from that side of the world and I've ended up in Manchester now (funny how these things come full circle...!). Mr Houtkop and I were talking about possibly cycling over; and were wondering about being able to do it on a flatter run than the drive over the Pennines (I don't do hills very well ).

How far was yours Norm? I don't know that part of the world. Yes, surprisingly the little rises to the locks get harder as you go on. Yes Archi Tect, WALK, takes a lot longer than bike, which is probably why I don't do so much of it nowadays!
SavageHoutkop (how did you get to that name?) you'd have to watch the glass in some places in the Manchester stretches, just don't bother cycling through, pick up the Brommie and walk - you don't want any punctures on the canal. It was mainly in one area, but there was an awful lot, but once you've got through that it was plain sailing.

Not sure if I made it clear but I was on the bike for my trip. I did about 45 miles on the tow path, although it felt like I had done about twice that.

I've not done any long walks for a while... blame The Smalls again. Last time we tried it, they started moaning about 2 miles in. OK, so we were walking up Snowdon at the time but...

SavageHoutkop (how did you get to that name?)

Combination of my maiden name & my mother's (one of which is translated into my 2nd language as the alternative didn't sound nearly as good) - strangely enough I found it wasn't taken (even on, say, Yahoo - rather than being *name*+*number* that normally is suggested...). Also a fairly bizarre sense of humour which would only work on a fairly small subsection of the (global) population (and which I'm not going to explain).

Husband uses 'SavageHoutkopOfTheRoof' in at least one spot on the web following same logic - I appended his (& now my) surname translated into English.... funnily enough that wasn't taken either!

That is intriguing! I'm pretty sure I know what part of it comes from - but what an original thought - I always made these things up on the spot or in this case used a name a friend gave me once when he caught me playing a harmonica when camping. I didn't realize it would be better to keep one throughout all forums.
