Wow, loads to think about, thank you. I hadn't even considered some of the stuff that's been written here. Primes, I take it are lenses that are just in focus the whole time, rather than a shifting (timely) zoom?

So the answer it seems, is that I need to get a better understanding of what I have.

Anywhere for picture crit? I'm happy to get shot down, if it'll get better results.

Just to clarify here.. a Prime lens has a fixed focal length (50mm for example) which means that it won't 'zoom in' or out to any other focal length... thus you frame your picture by moving yourself closer/further away. They are not 'in focus' all the time and still require focussing on whatever you are shooting. :thumbsup:

It's probably a good decision. Take the camera out, get used to shooting with manual and partially manual settings like av and keep practising until you get what you're after. Once you start taking more photos abd getting more in tune with what you photograph it'll become clear whether you need a new lens or not. Good lenses do not make a good photo, it's knowing your camera technically, your timing, awareness of light in a scene and you composition skills. Good luck and enjoy!!
