Apparently, according to Michael Portillo, Istanbul is in both Asia and Europe; so you can stand on one side of the city and look from one continent to another, and visa versa - obviously !

I'm not getting involved. That's nobody's business but the Turks.

A few years ago some colleagues of mine went to a conference in Istanbul. Every single time they mentioned it I would say "not Constantinople?". This went on for months and not once did anybody burst into song. Bunch of miserable sods.

I wouldn't be surprised if on a very clear day you could see the Isle of Man or the tops of the Llyn Peninsula from the top of the Dublin mountains or from one of those big chimneys on the edge of Dublin at Dun Laoghaire. I remember seeing the Irish coast once from Holyhead.

not from holyhead you wouldnt. maybe just maybe from top of holyhead mountain , if there was a 700ft tower on the copast and the atmospheric conditions were perfect enough to provide refraction at the horizon ( like the sunset )

based on a 722 ft elevation on Holyhead mountain and 69 miles in a straight line to the irish coast . the curvature of the earth would prevent it

I wonder if it could have been from one of the peaks on Llyn then? Used to do a bit of walking around there too. It was about 300 years ago though in my student days.

Well from Hong Kong (the capital of HK SAI) you can see Macau. Whether Hong Kong qualifies as a country or not is another matter entirely.
