I think the towbar racks are probably the money no object option - I've never been able to justify the cost over roofbars though, personally. (further complicating things, we have a roofbox that we use from time to time as well that needs to be accomodated in the value calculation)

I normally reckon on a set of square section bars from roofbox.co.uk (usually costing around £100) and the bike carriers we've used have been Cruz Bici (a bit agricultural, but ours have done a lot of trips without issues - £15 - £20 each depending on how many you buy at a time) and Thule Freerides (really good, and recommended for ease of use - they also lock to your bars, unlike the Bicis - about £60, I think).

We've always used Atera bars, because we've had such good experience of them. Similarly, I buy from roofbox for the same reason buying and hiring from them I've found them to be excellent - their "Find the stuff that fits your Car" feature works very nicely too.

I take the bars off the car after each trip - easier on the type that clamp on to roofrails (of which we've had two) but not difficult on the fixpoint type either. I leave at least two carriers in place to hold the spacing between the bars while they're stored.

We usually sell the bars when we change cars, and generally get between £40 and £60 to put towards the cost of a set for the next car. The carriers, of course, we keep and use again.

I've not had the issues others mention with ramming the bikes through height restrictions - I'm always painfully aware thet they're up there, and watch the road accordingly  Thule do provide a reminder sticker for your windscreen with their carriers though, iirc

Thank you very much forthe information, but, I am short... and I really do not think that I would be tall enough to get them on the roof of the car... and I am mostly sure I would not have the strength to lift Bertha on the roof if I were tall enough...

Check your manufacturers manual for the car. A lot of new cars have a greater percentage of recycled plastic used on the back end and are not suitable for tailgate mounted racks.
I've just looked on the Saris website. They seem to be saying the Bones tailgate racks are compatible but you would need to check this is correct. Their information has been found to change after being queried.
