Ever wondered why some diesels emit disgusting levels of killer soot?

You very very often see dangerous soot coming put of an exhaust on acceleration.
A sign of yet another illegal vehicle?

Not always illegal, I get to see too many diesels pumping out black smoke that still have a DPF fitted.
prior to DPF's it could be argued it is the sign of a healthy engine. When pumps were adjustable you would turn them up until you got a hint of black smoke at full throttle under load. The blackness is a sign of unburned diesel, so if it is pulling well you know its getting enough.
Yes, in the same way I feed my children until they start vomiting just slightly, so I can be sure they're not being starved

My old Auris would periodically chuck a cloud of smoke out usually just after moving away from a junction, on enquiring I was told it was the way it was designed to operate.
