Same for my pops too. Although he stopped professional spannering in 1970, when he went on the line at vauxhalls, for a lot more money.
I spent a good chunk of my childhood helping him fix the car we owned. At 12 I could strip down and rebuild a pinto engine and a crossflow ( Kent) engine . Made me a nice bit of money at 17 as mates knew I could fix cars.

My dad taught me a fair bit, but it was in my genes from him - I looked after my own bikes, and was very hands on as a kid. I am one of 4, the oldest. None of the others are that practical, but my youngest brother can't do anything, but is a dentist (very skilled in what he does). I am an accountant but can do everything DIY, and it's my biggest down fall - I hate accepting help where I can do it.... even with my broken spine - it's a 'give in' signal to me....

It's probably why I am still hands on as often as possible and hate having to " get someone in " to do things.

I stopped tinkering with cars when I needed a reliable one that didn't need a weekends worth of work every weekend and bought a modern ECU controlled one back in 1995 ( 1985 Mercedes190e 2.5 16v - yes I know how much a good one is worth these days.) been a dedicated main dealer or good Indy specialist user since. Back street was pot luck down here.
