To you or I, yes, but to a public that largely drive like loons and park without consideration such sensible suggestions are considered somewhere right of Mein Kampf.

Surely safety rules are left wing: 'elf-n-safety gorn maad and all that

Re: For those objecting to 2nd hand tyres or parts. Do you replace all the tyres and brakes etc whenever you buy a 2nd hand car? Or taken to extremes should a hire cae have new tyres after each user as you can't be sure what the previous guy did? Should an older but otherwise OK car be scrapped because only 2nd hand parts are available.

I should add I've never put 2nd hand tyres on a car but I'd have no worrries about doing so if I acquired a set of wheels and tyres - first checking they are OK of course

that's a bit silly really...

A second had tyre seller buys loads of tyres cheap and sells them..
These tyres are usually the throw aways..
when you buy a second hand car it's usually had a new mot done and checked over'i know' but you are legally protected if you buy it from a good dealer etc..
If you buy it off the side of the road ..you take ya chance..

Surely a 2nd hand tyre dealer is selling otherwise good tyres off scrap cars, just like any other 2nd hand parts. He's not going to sell worn out or damaged tyres as no one would buy em and no (reputable) fitter would fit em

Edit: quite apart from potentially saving money, re-using rather that throwing away perfectly good items is environmentally a good thing too

Tyres, yes, without fail. Within days of getting the Ford Fusion of Wee Wee and Cabbageness it was shod with 4 x new Dunlops. What value do I place on my life and those of my loved ones? A damn sight more than £200 or £300, that's for sure. In my last job I spent long enough scraping people off the tarmac to not want to join them.

Brakes are a slightly different boiling receptacle of aquatic life forms. They can be visually inspected and their health determined with an extremely high degree of effectiveness, something that is not possible to a reliable degree with tyres.

That should be in the joke section.

I'd agree that trying to re-use pefectly serviceable items is environmentally a good thing, particularly with goods that have a high environmental cost to manufacture such as tyres, if it can be done safely and cost effectively.

I'm unconvinced that most used tyre dealers have the level of expertise needed to determine whether tyres are serviceable or not, that the history of most used tyres is known well enough to assist that decision, that reputable fitters are commonplace in the second hand tyre industry, or that most of them really care.

Moreover I'm not sure a lot of used tyres really represent a money saving given the level of tread a lot of them have.

One thing I won't compromise on is car tyres. Ever since my 'second' car came with a pair of no-name rear tyres and caused a low speed spin (180 degree on a bend).

I've changed tyres as they start to get old, and not worn.

So if you hire a car ?

Out of my control, changing my own is not. The question was asked and I answered it, I am not saying you should do the same, there again if you spent a lot of your working day around smashed up cars it might make you see a different picture.

I have only needed to hire a car 3 times, each of those times the car I hired had covered less than 3,000 miles.

Replacing bongo brand tyres - abso bloody lutely.

But replacing perfectly good branded tyres on a 2nd hand car as some have argued . A bit silly in my view. Why stop at tyres - what about shock absorbers, steering rack, all the brake parts, abs controller, hey the body shell could be bent so best replace that too.

When we picked up my wife's 'new to us' Qashqai I checked the tyres. The front hat been replaced with Michelin and the rears were the orignal continentals - the car was previously a 'mobility' hire vehicle so had been maintained on the dot.

Bongo brand tyres are a no no.

Did you know how many Motab cars there are in the UK. Certainly serves a good purpose.

Loads. Our neighbour gets a new SUV every three years - she just can't walk far following numerous health problems. Most cars you find in the car supermarkets are often ex. motability.
