Un flippingbelievable:

"Coventry cyclist 'seriously ill' after being trapped under van on A45"

Blimey. What happened?

"A cyclist is 'seriously ill' in hospital this Sunday after the bike he was riding crashed with a van in Coventry."

Ah! He crashed with a van!

"He ended up trapped under the vehicle and crews from Canley fire station were sent at 6am to pull him free.

Crew commander Rob Smith, of Canley station, said the man was taken to hospital but the extent of his injuries were not known.

He said: “The gentleman did have lights but they were very small and he wasn’t wearing a high vis jacket.

“We don’t know the cause but he was struck by the van from behind.

“Whether you’re riding a push bike or a motorbike make sure you are seen - wear a high vis jacket and ensure you have working lights.”"

Wait now, wtf did you just say? "he was struck by the van from behind." So, the van hit the cyclist? Now I'm confused, was the cyclist riding backwards into the van? The lights on cars are quite small, doesn't mean they're not legal. Were they legal? Does hi vis prevent vans driving into you from behind? Where is any mention of the van driver? Was there a van driver involved?

"The van driver did have eyes but they are very small and he has to look at so many things, it's not easy you know, and he has appointments to keep and never enough time, and wasn't there a low sun? ... It happened at night you say. Ah, must've been a bright full moon then. I mean, it could happen to any one of us, don't judge him on one accident."

My light's very small. It's a thousand candle power. I'm worried. Anyway, back to Cara, did you know she reported during WW2?

"Dresden was badly damaged today when it collided with three thousand tons of high explosive."
Was

"Iceberg Collides With Titanic"

one of hers?

Yet another 'knickers in a twist shoot the messenger' thread.

Picking through the rants, it appears objection is taken to the comments of the fire station officer, so direct your bile at him.

No doubt he's fed up with scraping cyclists off the road.

What could a bloke who has dealt with hundreds of crashes possibly know?

He has decided to speak out, and it is not up to the journalist to tell him he should not.

Does he have any evidence that the actions he proposes cyclists take actually reduces the risks to cyclists from nobber drivers?

Or is it the same old "common sense innit?" anecdata bs?

You missed all the "rants" pointed out that "A cyclist is 'seriously ill' in hospital this Sunday after the bike he was riding crashed with a van in Coventry." is at best an unusual way to describe an accident in which the can hit the cyclist from behind.

If the most recent comment at the bottom of the article is to be believed (and even if it is not an accurate account), the crew commander should be more circumspect with his comments and the journalist should engage her brain before parroting them:

"What this article fails to mention is that the cyclist wasn't actually on the A45 road, he was riding on the grass verge which runs alongside the A45 and the van then mounted the kerb AND the verge alongside the Hotel and hit him from behind. The cyclist could have been wearing pink and blue flashing fairy lights with the brightest high vis clothes ever and the van would have still hit him."
