I just sit mine in the stand on the top tube near the saddle, and do the clamp up enough to stop it falling off.. i.e. not tight at all. Wrapping a cloth around the clamp protects from scratches. Any work involving heavy effort/weight being put onto a component is done with the bike out of the stand but for general cleaning and gear adjustment this seems to work.
