Carbon fork and Fork Cages

Hi All,
How safe to attach and load something like fork cage (see the pictures) to the Carbon fork which doesn't have that special bosses on the fork. Just plain Carbon fork ( Cannondale Topstone 2 2021)
Would you attach something like it or maybe already have it attached? Cheers

don't bodge it, it will slip and flip you over the bars. get a fork that's designed for bikepacking if that's what you want to do, or use bar and frame bags / seat post pack (with a alu post) etc

I wouldn't. Not because it will slip, but because the tubes are not designed for compression forces around the circumference and leaving those straps tightened around them could cause failure.

I’ve got pretty much the same set up with the Planet X version (looks exactly the same). I must admit I had the same dilemma but did it anyway! No problems so far but I did use the supplied jubilee clips rather than the cable ties which slipped after my first test run. Had them on for a year now and a few miles under my belt.

Would also concern me that grit etc could get trapped between the bottle mount and fork and cause abrasion; which could act as a failure initiation point..

Question is will you be on rough gravel and tracks. If so buy a forks with bosses and sell the topstones fork.

Used these for a few days this week on some Enve forks with Voile and random velcro straps;

Only had a Xped sleeping mat on each leg so no great weight, but it worked fine and they didn't slip at all on North Norfolks finest b and side roads.

Putting weight on your bars and forks is awful compared to having it on the back - a toptube or handlebar bag for stuff you actually need to access quickly should be plenty then.

I can’t find these fork pannier mounts from the links above. It looks like Planet X & Dolan no longer supply them.

My MTB doesn’t have fork mounting bosses. The forks are 40 mm diamete.

Have to concede that when my steel forks gave out on me, I just had the strange feeling that my bike was getting longer. I don't think a carbon fork would offer the same early warning.

I have posted this picture of the other rider's bike before, but some of you may not have seen it so I'll post it again below.

It definitely pays to have a close look at your bike from time to time to try to spot impending doom. That problem would definitely have been obvious for weeks before the fork failed!

Thankfully my forks weren't getting all of their structural integrity from my mudguards but I could maybe have eaked out a few more months from them if they were. I think my problems came from when I vaulted an unexpected tree trunk (my bike, less so) in the ever ready night rider induced darkness.
