I'm presuming that the protector plate is made of alloy?
If that's the case, judging by the indentations in it, I would remove it and inspect the carbon underneath.

About 1mm thick. Some of them marks were in it from before when on the odd occasion the chain fell off as well. I'm pretty sure its just glued on so yeah it would be easy to remove and reapply. I'll give it a look over later :-)
