How come?

It's an 'in' joke. The tyres weigh the equivalent of a small moon, roll really slowly, aren't particularly grippy, dead feeling, are a pig to get on or off (god help you if you do get a puncture) but the only glowing quality is they are very hard to puncture.

Loads of people use them. My MTB's Ice Spiker Pro tyres weigh less and roll faster, and that's with 400 metal spikes in them. I'm sure Marathons are full of lead.

650b/27.5 tyres are a traditional French touring tyre size that fell into disuse, was ressurected by a California touring bike boutique company and became a very niche, nice riding but oddball size as 650b. The MTB world changed from universal 26" to a fat 700c renamed 29". This was too big for smaller riders so they grabbed the 650b as an intetmediate size, renamed 27.5 and all but abandoned the universal 26" MTB size

27.5 today is mainly an mtb offroad tyre, it is quite hard to pick up quality commuter/road tyres in any high street bike shop. Mail order is the way to go.

The Subway used to be fitted with universal 26" wheels with massive range of available tyres. I would like to be in the room when tHalfords decided to change to 27.5

You have a bike with a nice wheel size that is meant to be used with fatter road tyres for comfort and cruising efficiency. The medium treaded Marathon tyres work well on roads, tracks and trails and you can, with care take it into MTB off road territory.
Plain Marathons are pretty puncture resistant and the M+ are in comparison a bit heavy and sluggish. If you cannot face puncture repairs, M+ is the one to use.

The MTB world moved from 26 to 27.5 way before 29ers. It will be 35ers next week. 27.5 wasn't an interim size for smaller riders. My wife has a 29er XS frame, too small for me, but it's an XC MTB rather than a trail bike, which mine is.

No the 29er concept goes way back but was commercialised in about 1999. The 27.5 mtb was introduced in 2007.

Mainstream wasn't ! 27.5's were widely available before the fashion went to 29ers. The concept, maybe, but mainstream 27.5 was the new 26 then 29'ers came in. And don't get me started on Plus and mullets !
