The phones in the UK are the cheapest in Europe, so they try to make their money on the contracts. They know that most people will over communicate like crazy given the opportunity! My kids pay £28-£35 a month and think they're winning!
I carry the cheapest I can get from Dixon/Currys on PYG with T mobile and only use it as a back up when travelling, or for the odd text. The last one was bought in 1998 and died this year. Total buying/running cost worked out at about £25 per year.
The replacement dies all sorts of things I don't need, like a camera and colour screen with "apps" (whatever the are) and cost £12. With luck I will be replacing it in about 2022!

Bah! Humbug!
