Grumblin at Garmin on the Granny Gear
What is it with the funny little bracket welded from seat tube to top tube? Did they realise they'd got the design wrong and had to weld in a bracket to strengthen it? Anyone got one?

It's called a gusset.
No, it's a common feature on many frames.
No, see above. If you use lightweight Alu alloys to shed weight and the alloy welding process needs a bit of strengthening to make it safe and not break when you launch it off big jumps and stuff, then a gusset is a better idea than no gusset.
No, not on a Halfords frame, but I have strengthening components built into the design of my lightweight steel hardtail frame, and the layup design of both of my carbon frames is designed to add strength around tube junctions.
