I don't do it daily, but my Sony Vieo goes in a simple faux leather case, that is mostly to protect the plastic cover.

That then goes in the Ortalieb pannier on the 'wheel' side so that the pannier platic side is acting as further protection, then rain jacket etc packed aroud it

Last year whilst having laptop in one panner and a projector in the other (projector in a padded bag) I got knocked off by a blind minicab driver. The projector got a direct hit from the car, the laptop an inderect hit from the kerb.

No damage at all to either (which is more than can be said for the rider)

Laptops now-a-days are pretty tough hombres, they are designed to be handled by airport baggage chuckers and teenage mutant ninja students
