Is it a matter of when as opposed to if that Pog will take it? He's up to 21, aged 26 and is absolutely battering everyone!
Nope. Merckx did 7 TDFs and won no stage in 1977, but two in 1975 and 8 in 1974 on his way to the Giro-Tour-Worlds triple, so his stage win record was 6-8-4-6-DNS-8-2-DNS-0.Despite his huge talent just how many more tours are in him? Merckx did 8 TDFs but didn’t he win just one stage in the last three of them?

Pog so far is 3-3-3-2-6-4
Cav was 0-4-6-5-5-3-2-0-1-4-0-0-DNS-DNS-4-DNS-0-1
So Pog's not collecting the stages as quickly as either in their peaks, but Merckx was a different era and Cav scored half his wins in his first 5 TDFs, which would suggest Pog might be touch-and-go for the record based on 17 stage wins in his first 5.
But who knows what the future will bring? That's part of what keeps us following the sport.
It's looking like a case of when, not if.
I wouldn't wish it on him or anyone else, but fate can drastically change sporting trajectories. Froome's life changing crash, followed not much later by Bernal's, to name just two.
