Mod note: deleting doping references.

Let's stick to the spirit of the thread title rather than trotting out old and tedious doping clichés that invariably cause a thread to meltdown.

Thanks.

The biggest barrier to winning 36 stages, will be himself. So far he has dedicated his whole life to a strict training schedule. Very little time for normal pleasures.

He will need tremendous self-control to continue this life style into his 30's.

Good morning,

I’d go with if he wants to continue to win G.C. then he probably won’t beat Cav’s record, as by the end of this one he will have already have ridden 6 TDFs

If he decides that he has won enough G.C.s and goes for the most stages record then he could possibly achieve it but it is by no means certain.

Cav did a huge number of tours on the basis of being a sprinter, TP’s team backers may not want him to ride for stage wins at the expense of G.C.

Without team support the unthinkable could happen and he could be dropped for the next new talent before breaking that record.

Despite his huge talent just how many more tours are in him? Merckx did 8 TDFs but didn’t he win just one stage in the last three of them?

I’ve just watched the 11k TT stage so it is hard to believe that he could be beaten. :-) but he is so good that it is easy to imagine that he just “burns out”

Bye

Like with all amazing talents someone will soon pop up out of nowhere and end their run. The same will happen to Pog.

Cav’s record is so special as it spans his whole career, not just the time they were totally dominating.

Even if he gets up to 25 in this Tour he still needs to be totally dominant in another two to three Tours to get to more than 36, no easy task heading into his late 20s.

Nope. Merckx did 7 TDFs and won no stage in 1977, but two in 1975 and 8 in 1974 on his way to the Giro-Tour-Worlds triple, so his stage win record was 6-8-4-6-DNS-8-2-DNS-0.

Pog so far is 3-3-3-2-6-4

Cav was 0-4-6-5-5-3-2-0-1-4-0-0-DNS-DNS-4-DNS-0-1

So Pog's not collecting the stages as quickly as either in their peaks, but Merckx was a different era and Cav scored half his wins in his first 5 TDFs, which would suggest Pog might be touch-and-go for the record based on 17 stage wins in his first 5.

But who knows what the future will bring? That's part of what keeps us following the sport.

Pog has talked about maybe retiring after 2028. But he just said this, this week, after this tour. But who knows. I just get the feeling he’s not that bothered about most stage wins.

Is it a matter of when as opposed to if that Pog will take it? He's up to 21, aged 26 and is absolutely battering everyone!

If he retires 2028 and gets 4 wins a tour he doesn't succeed . If retires 2030 and gets 3 per tour he does it ... I suspect his win rate will drop . He might only do 2 more tours for the record 6 . He will want to win the vuelta one year. If he rides till he's 34 god knows ...even not winning the tour he's going to pick up stages .

It's all down to his retirement I think

For some reason I suspect Jonas will burn out faster than Pogacar. Not sure if Pogacar's entire problem rests in racing too much. He is racing and winning from March to October. If he cuts that down by a few weeks, he can probably maintain the mental freshness. Things look worse at the end of a 3 week Tour, than they do 3 weeks later.

It's looking like a case of when, not if.

I wouldn't wish it on him or anyone else, but fate can drastically change sporting trajectories. Froome's life changing crash, followed not much later by Bernal's, to name just two.

yup.

And there's also the possibility of him losing interest in TdeF wins (most likely once he's won 6 of the things!); might focus on classics, Vuelta/Giro/Worlds/Roubaix etc ...

needs to stop trying to win everything but that is what makes him so likeable to me. last TdF stage, lets go balls out and see what happens. paris Roubaix? same thing. Couple of races less or a new challenge/challenger might be better for him. Also a bad crash a la Froome/bernal and poss jonas and the dynamic seems to change now.
